The Business Development Director will lead efforts to identify and pursue opportunities to grow the firm’s revenue and client base. The Director will create and manage client relations programs, work to elevate the firm’s profile, and provide business development consultation and mentoring to attorneys at all levels.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with firm leadership to formulate business development goals and create strategies that support expansion of existing practice areas as well as ventures into new practice areas.
- Partner with practice group leaders to identify potential new clients, industries, and markets. Provide consultation and leadership for practice group growth initiatives.
- Prepare and attend client presentations and pitch meetings. Provide consultation to attorneys on presenting, selling, and building client relationships. Establish systems to ensure timely, effective follow up.
- Identify, lead, and manage organized cross-selling efforts among attorneys in different legal specialties and different geographic regions.
- Establish and administer programs that contribute toward client retention, client development, and overall client relations.
- Be creative in identifying ways to promote the firm to existing and potential clients in new practices, markets, and industries.
- Respond to requests for proposals for new and existing client work, identifying and leveraging key differentiators of the firm to win business.
- Provide consultation for the conceptualization, development, and execution of business development plans for the firm and individual practice groups.
- Develop, establish, and manage the firm’s branding program.
- Provide training and coaching to attorneys related to business development approaches, establishment as a thought leader, and managing client relationships.
- Maintain awareness of business trends and the competitive landscape, and proactively share information and make recommendations to respond to trends.
- Implement metrics and measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of business development initiatives and determine return on investment.
- Develop and manage the Business Development & Client Relations budget.
Requirements
- Advanced degree (MBA, MS, or JD) strongly preferred.
- BS or BA in Marketing, Journalism, Communications, or related field considered with the right experience.
- At least ten years in a business development leadership role. Experience in a professional services environment (preferably law firm).
- Strong business acumen. Track record of being aggressive, creative, and resourceful in strategizing and executing business development initiatives.
- Highly professional, adaptable, industrious, and detail oriented. Able to work well with nuanced, complex, and confidential information. Take-charge attitude with the ability to lead people and projects to meet goals.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills. Skilled communicator able to engage and motivate others at all organizational levels. Collaborative, collegial approach to working with others but with an eye on results.
