Pennsylvania’s Right-to-Know Law

Jul 1, 2025 | Articles & Updates

The Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law was amended in 2009, becoming one of the most liberal statutes permitting access to public records. Records can be requested by anyone, for any reason, so long as the records are deemed “public.” Corporate records can also be marked as public when those records pertain to that company’s business dealings with a government agency. Often, records sought are from these private entities that should be exempt from production, including financial information, personal information, and records that are proprietary, confidential, or corporate trade secrets.

Attorneys at Burns White have been retained in a variety of matters by companies that work with government agencies to safeguard company records, policies, and other documents from release to the public.  We have experience responding to Right-to-Know requests and litigating disputes over production of records before the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records, trial courts, and appellate Courts throughout Pennsylvania.
