About the Job

This is truly a senior role wherein the majority of work is of a complex nature. The person in this position must take ownership of cases and workflow, be able to anticipate next steps in the litigation process, and initiate activities to ensure deadlines are met.

  • Under minimum supervision of an attorney, complete tasks of considerable difficulty requiring evaluation, ingenuity, and expertise.
  • Coordinate discovery, trial preparation, and other large projects with little direction.
  • Work independently and exercise significant independent judgment and discretion.
  • Draft case summaries, medical records summaries and line-bys, pleadings, discovery responses, affidavits, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct research by gathering and analyzing extensive and/or complex information.
  • Complete cite checking and prepare documents for filing.
  • Independently interact with clients, experts, opposing counsel, and others.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in paralegal studies or comparable experience. At least four years’ litigation experience, including working with medical records. Strong understanding of the (defense) litigation process. Preferred practice experience includes civil litigation, professional liability, medical malpractice, healthcare, insurance defense, and/or commercial litigation. Proven ability to work independently and willingness to take initiative. Highly organized and able to prioritize competing priorities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Assertiveness to coordinate deadlines among multiple attorneys and delegate work to others. Able to adapt to changing priorities and effectively delegate. Strong commitment to quality and client service. Computer skills including MS Office applications, billing/time-entry, and document management systems.

Equipment, Physical/Mental Demands, Working Conditions

Personal computer and other office equipment such as telephone, typewriter, calculator, fax machine, duplicating machine, etc.

Sitting for extended periods, standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 20 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines. Range of hearing and vision sufficient to operate standard office machines and communicate with clients in person and via telephone.

Able to deal with stress in a fast-paced work environment with multiple priorities. Make decisions and adapt to changing work situations. Grasp and apply new ideas and technologies. Communicate and successfully interact with various personalities at all organizational levels.

Typical office setting, normally Monday through Friday business hours. Occasional overtime as required.
